Invisalign® is a clear aligner system developed in the USA that combines orthodontic principles with digital technology to help correct certain types of malocclusion. The aligners are designed to be worn for 20–22 hours per day and are removed only for eating, drinking, or oral hygiene. They work by gradually moving teeth into new positions over the course of treatment.
– Step 1: Consultation and Assessment

Invisalign® clear aligners are thin, transparent plastic trays designed to fit over your teeth. They are an alternative to traditional metal braces and do not use brackets or wires.
Aligners are made from a smooth, custom-moulded plastic designed to fit your unique dental anatomy.
The aligners are removable, which adds convenience during meals, oral hygiene, or certain activities such as sports. However, consistent wear (20-22 hours a day) is important for treatment effectiveness.
Your treatment is digitally planned with 3D oral scanning technology, helping to map the proposed movement of your teeth. The number of aligners, treatment time, and expected outcomes will vary depending on your case, and only a registered dental practitioner can assess your suitability.

What is Invisalign?
Invisalign® may be an option for adults and teenagers seeking an alternative to traditional braces. Suitability depends on individual clinical needs, which can range from mild to more complex orthodontic cases. Invisalign® treatment involves a series of customised clear aligners designed to gradually reposition teeth. Aligners are made for both the upper and lower teeth and are created using a 3D scan, which captures detailed images of your current tooth positions. Based on this information, a digital plan is developed to guide how your teeth may be moved over the course of treatment.
Patients are provided with a sequence of aligners, usually changed every 1–2 weeks under the guidance of their dentist. Each aligner is slightly different in shape to apply gentle forces that encourage tooth movement. In some cases, your dentist may recommend attachments—small, tooth-coloured shapes made from composite material—that are bonded to certain teeth. What to Expect
– Treatment begins with a consultation with a registered provider who is certified to provide Invisalign®. A recent comprehensive dental examination is required to identify any existing dental conditions and to assess whether Invisalign® treatment is suitable. At Hampstead Dental, we also offer a digital simulation tool that provides an example of how teeth may appear after treatment. This is intended for illustrative purposes only and does not guarantee treatment outcomes.
– If you are assessed as suitable for Invisalign®, your dentist will take a detailed 3D scan and clinical photographs. This information is used to develop a customised treatment plan and to manufacture your series of clear aligners.
– Step 2: Starting Treatment
– Your first set of Invisalign® aligners is usually available within 2–4 weeks after the scan. Your dentist will check that the aligners fit appropriately and provide instructions for wear. In most cases, aligners are worn for 20–22 hours per day and changed every 1–2 weeks as directed. Follow-up appointments are generally scheduled every 6–8 weeks to monitor progress and make any adjustments as required.
– Step 3: Completion of Active Treatment
– At the end of the active treatment phase, the planned tooth movements will have been completed. Outcomes vary between individuals, and further adjustments may be needed depending on your clinical situation.
– Step 4: Retention Phase
– After active treatment, retainers are generally required to help maintain the position of your teeth. Invisalign® offers Vivera™ retainers, or your dentist may recommend alternative options. Aftercare
It’s important to know that a completed Invisalign treatment does not necessarily mean aligned teeth forever. This is because teeth have a tendency to resume to their previous natural positions. Hence it’s important to continue wearing your retainers, which will be provided to you post your treatment.
Alongside wearing retainers, maintaining optimal oral health is also recommended to preserve your new smile. We advise regular 6-month check-ups and cleans to ensure your oral health is professionally maintained.Patient-Focused Care
