Sedation Dentistry in Maribyrnong

Elderly woman in dentist chair smilingDoes going to the dentist make you feel nervous? Have you been avoiding your dental checkups because of your fears? At Hampstead Dental, our team understands that you may have had negative experiences at dental clinics before. We strive to make sure that you’re comfortable and feel fully prepared to move forward with your care. To assist you, we provide sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry is also referred to as sleep dentistry, conscious sedation, oral sedation or relaxation dentistry. No matter what the name is, the focus is on controlling your anxiety levels and making sure that your discomfort is minimised.

The Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are three main types of sedation dentistry for you to take advantage of:

  • Oral sedation – A tablet is taken the night before your procedure, then again about an hour before you have your appointment with us. You’ll be fully conscious but feel calm with greatly reduced anxiety.
  • Inhalation sedation – You’ve likely heard of laughing gas or nitrous oxide. You’ll breathe normally with a mask over your nose and mouth. The gas gives you a relaxed feeling and blocks out discomfort. You can drive home normally afterwards with no long-lasting effects from this type of sedation.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation – This form of sedation is delivered directly into your bloodstream. It’s administered by a qualified anaesthesiologist. You’ll remain unconscious during your care and wake up with no memory of what has been done. Have someone pick you up at the end of your appointment, as you’ll be unable to drive.

Protecting Your Safety

When you choose to have any form of sedation dentistry, you can rest assured that your safety is our utmost priority. Your vital signs are carefully monitored the entire time. Our team members have been extensively trained in administering sedation dentistry and are fully qualified to do so.
