Dentist in Western Melbourne Cosmetic, Implant General Dental

Our clinic is fully computerised. When we take x-rays we use a digital system that uses an ultra low dose of radiation and gives instant results, without the need for any chemicals. We can take digital photos (and video/photos) of your teeth, and show you on the screen, explaining what is happening in those areas you can’t normally see. We keep these images in your profile, to enable us to monitor your progress toward optimum oral health. For your health and safety our clinic is Amalgam and Mercury Free. We are a partner in the Australian Dental Association Victoria "Dentists for Cleaner Water" project, helping keep Victorian waterways free of harmful Mercury. As you walk from our patient lounge to the treatment rooms, you will notice our state of the art sterilisation room where we use the latest sterilisation equipment, to ensure your visit to our clinic is hygienic and the outcomes successful. All our processes conform to the required State and Federal Government standards.

You can experience your dental treatment in the comfort of a brand new, state-of-the-art clinic in relaxing surroundings, and professional staff who really care about your wellbeing. Our treatments are always planned for the circumstances of the individual. We try to retain your oral integrity unless extraction is the only option, meaning you may be able to eat normally well into your senior years.

RCT - Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is also known as endodontic treatment. Our dentists routinely carry out RCT (Root Canal Treatment). During 3 appointments, they will deaden the nerve and remove it, clense and disinfect the canals of the teeth, then apply medicaments, stabilise the tooth, and then fit a final filling on the tooth.

Root Canal Treatments have the reputation of being costly and painful - but thats not really the truth. The 3 appointments are spread about 10 to 14 days apart, so will often fall into 2 or 3 pay periods, which can help spread the cost. Members of some health funds like HBA, Medibank Private and MBF have negotiated a lower pricing on Root Canal Treatments for their members. Also members of Noble Dentist and Dentacare can access lower prices. Note that the actual cost will depend on the number of roots in the tooth (teeth can have from 1 to 5 roots - typically more roots in the rear teeth). Nonetheless we should be able to give you a pretty accurate estimation of cost at your intial appointment. After the nerve is removed at the first appointment, there should no longer be any discomfort from the nerve. However it is important to follow the dentists suggested schedule, so that you do not "waste" the work (and money) for the Root Canal Process. Leaving it more than the suggested two weeks from appointment 1 to appointment 2, or appointment 2 to appointment 3 could lead to re-infection of the tooth, and mean the costly and time consuming routine of starting over - so do be sure to follow up on your appointments.

Once the nerve is gone, the tooth is not receiving nutrients from the milk, cheeses and other sources of nutrition and calcium that we need for good strong, healthy teeth. Therefore many dentists will suggest a crown is a good idea to strengthen the tooth structure. Some dentists will want to put the crown on right away, others will suggest a stabilisation period - and the answer is a combination of the dentists experience and the situation with your tooth in question.

The option for many people is extraction - however while its cheaper in the long run, extraction of a tooth may lead to the adjacent teeth drifting over time - which can even affect the teeth at the front of your smile. Replacing an extracted tooth with a bridge or implant, is certainly more expansive than a root canal treatment and a crown - so it is wise to discuss the options fully with your dentist before extracting a tooth.

Root Calan Treatment involves the following dental item codes:-

ADA Dental Item Code Description of Service
419 Open & Drain (FIRST STAGE)
415 Debridement of Canal (first canal) (SECOND STAGE)
416 per additional canal (SECOND STAGE)
417 Obturation of Canal (first canal)  (THIRD STAGE)
418 per additional canal (THIRD STAGE)
022 at each appointment 1 - 2 xrays per tooth

While culturally we seem to all be scared of the dentist, a Root Canal really is not something to be worried about - and our team will make it as comfortable for you as possible - in the chair and on your pocket.

Root Planing - Periodontics – SRP – Gum Disease - Periodontal treatment

Our dentists will regularly perform root planing, (or scaling & root planing) for patients who require treatment for periodontal disease in order to help make their gums healthier, and reduce the risk of losing teeth. This is also known by some people as a "deep clean". Using special tools, the area between the teeth and gums is cleaned for plaque/calculus build up, thus removing the bacteria that cause this gum infection. While severe or complex cases may be referred to a Specialist Periodontist, however unlike some dentists who will not do any periodontal work, the majority of cases will be treated by our dentists. To address a case of periodontal disease, the area between the teeth and gums may need to be cleaned on a regular basis, over a course of treatment - typically once a fortnight for 3 - 4 visits, and then a visit every 6 - 8 weeks, until you can return to your regular 6 monthly check ups. After an initial appointment, our dentist may also place you in the care of our hygienist. They are expert at looking after gum health, and can explain clearly for you how you can assist in keeping your teeth for life. He will keep the dentist updated on your progress, and your dentist will regularly check in on you during your visits with the hygienist.

Note that while some dentists / dental practices charge for "root planing" by tooth that they "clean", we charge by arch or quadrant (depending on the way your health fund charges).

Most Health Funds deem item 222 for deep cleaning (or root planing) to be Major Dental, and this will come from your major dental allocation.  Check if your health fund level of cover has cover for this item number.  Also note that this item number has a 12 month waiting period from when you join.  All that said - isnt it better to pay alittle to look after your gum health, so that you do not lose your teeth?  Once your gums are damaged and recede, they cannot grow back... and replacing a tooth or several teeth is a much more costly exercise in the long run.

The common item codes used for Periodontic services are:-

ADA Dental Item Code Dental item number description
222 SRP - Scaling & Root planing - commonly called Deep Cleaning
221 Clinical Periodontal Analysis - commonly called Periodontal Charting
225 Non surgical Periodontal Treatment
213 Treatment of Acute Periodontal Infection
