Invisalign Treatment in Melbourne

At Hampstead Dental, our dentists are certified Invisalign® providers and our clinic has been recognized by Invisalign® with Diamond Provider status. Invisalign® uses clear, removable aligners as an alternative to traditional braces for orthodontic treatment. Treatment suitability and expected outcomes vary for each person and can only be determined after a comprehensive consultation with a registered provider.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign® is a clear aligner system developed in the USA that combines orthodontic principles with digital technology to help correct certain types of malocclusion. The aligners are designed to be worn for 20–22 hours per day and are removed only for eating, drinking, or oral hygiene. They work by gradually moving teeth into new positions over the course of treatment.

Invisalign® may be an option for adults and teenagers seeking an alternative to traditional braces. Suitability depends on individual clinical needs, which can range from mild to more complex orthodontic cases. A consultation with a registered provider is required to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you.

How it works?

Invisalign® treatment involves a series of customised clear aligners designed to gradually reposition teeth. Aligners are made for both the upper and lower teeth and are created using a 3D scan, which captures detailed images of your current tooth positions. Based on this information, a digital plan is developed to guide how your teeth may be moved over the course of treatment.

Patients are provided with a sequence of aligners, usually changed every 1–2 weeks under the guidance of their dentist. Each aligner is slightly different in shape to apply gentle forces that encourage tooth movement. In some cases, your dentist may recommend attachments—small, tooth-coloured shapes made from composite material—that are bonded to certain teeth. These act as anchors to assist the aligners in repositioning teeth, particularly where more complex movements are required.

  • Step 1: Consultation and Assessment

Treatment begins with a consultation with a registered provider who is certified to provide Invisalign®. A recent comprehensive dental examination is required to identify any existing dental conditions and to assess whether Invisalign® treatment is suitable. At Hampstead Dental, we also offer a digital simulation tool that provides an example of how teeth may appear after treatment. This is intended for illustrative purposes only and does not guarantee treatment outcomes.

If you are assessed as suitable for Invisalign®, your dentist will take a detailed 3D scan and clinical photographs. This information is used to develop a customised treatment plan and to manufacture your series of clear aligners.

    Step 2: Starting Treatment

Your first set of Invisalign® aligners is usually available within 2–4 weeks after the scan. Your dentist will check that the aligners fit appropriately and provide instructions for wear. In most cases, aligners are worn for 20–22 hours per day and changed every 1–2 weeks as directed. Follow-up appointments are generally scheduled every 6–8 weeks to monitor progress and make any adjustments as required.

Step 3: Completion of Active Treatment

At the end of the active treatment phase, the planned tooth movements will have been completed. Outcomes vary between individuals, and further adjustments may be needed depending on your clinical situation.

    Step 4: Retention Phase

After active treatment, retainers are generally required to help maintain the position of your teeth. Invisalign® offers Vivera™ retainers, or your dentist may recommend alternative options. Retainers may need to be replaced over time and involve an additional fee. Your dentist will advise on the most appropriate retention approach for your needs.

Benefits of Invisalign

Here are some advantages of Invisalign and how they can work wonders for you.

  • Virtually Transparent
  • Comfort of wear
  • Removable
  • Predictable

Invisalign® clear aligners are thin, transparent plastic trays designed to fit over your teeth. They are an alternative to traditional metal braces and do not use brackets or wires.

Invisalign® clear aligners are made from a smooth, custom-moulded plastic designed to fit over your teeth. Unlike traditional braces, they do not use brackets or wires. Aligners should be worn for 20–22 hours per day and are only removed for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, or flossing.

The aligners are removable, which may be convenient during meals, oral hygiene, or certain activities such as sports. However, consistent wear is important for treatment effectiveness, and your dentist will provide guidance tailored to your individual needs.

Your treatment is digitally planned with 3D oral scanning technology, which helps map the movement of your teeth. The number of aligners, treatment time, and expected outcomes will vary depending on your case, and only a registered dental practitioner can assess your suitability.

  • Less dental visits
  • Easier to keep clean
  • They boost your self-confidence
  • The Invisalign Difference

Follow-up appointments are generally scheduled every 6–8 weeks to monitor progress and provide new aligners. Regular reviews help ensure your treatment is progressing as intended.

It is recommended that you remove your Invisalign aligner trays while brushing or flossing your teeth. This helps you efficiently clean your teeth as well as the trays with warm water. Invisalign allows for easy brushing and flossing as there is no wires or brackets getting in the way of cleaning your teeth.

Aligners should be cleaned daily with lukewarm water, and it is recommended that you brush and floss your teeth after meals before reinserting them. Because they are transparent, aligners may be less visible than traditional braces in social or professional settings.

Aftercare

It’s important to know that a completed Invisalign treatment does not necessarily mean aligned teeth forever. This is because teeth have a tendency to resume to their previous natural positions. Hence it’s important to continue wearing your retainers, which will be provided to you post your treatment.

Alongside wearing retainers, maintaining optimal oral health is also recommended to preserve your new smile. We advise regular 6-month check-ups and cleans to ensure your oral health is professionally maintained.

Safe and Optimum results

At Hampstead Dental, we believe in ethical and responsible caregiving. Our professionalism and medical ethics forbid us from recommending any treatment unless we are confident that the desired result can be safely achieved. This is why we will always assess your smile first. As your Invisalign journey begins, we will regularly monitor your progress to ensure appropriate adjustments and professional medical advice is awarded to ensure safe and optimum results. At Hampstead Dental, we are with patients from start to finish, offering supporting all throughout your treatment journey.

FAQ's

Why Invisalign?

Invisalign is known for being discreet and convenient. Its smart track materials help straighten teeth predictably, which means no guesswork. The aligners are also customized to fit around your teeth and hence are more comfortable than other traditional orthodontic measures. You can even see results in as little as a few weeks!

How long will my Invisalign treatment take?

Each case is different and so depending on the complexity of your case, you could complete your Invisalign journey in as little as 6 months. Some patients even start to see results in a matter of weeks! When you see us at your free Invisalign consultation, we will be able to give you a better idea.

Invisalign vs braces. What’s right for me?

Your dentist will assess your case to see whether Invisalign or traditional braces are a suitable option for you. There have been some instances, where patients with severe crowding have even required a combination of both Invisalign and traditional orthodontic treatments. Book your free Invisalign consultation with us, to see what treatment option is best for you. This free consultation will be with one of our Invisalign certified dentists.

Can I go to any dental practice for Invisalign?

There are a lot of dentists that are Invisalign-trained but some are not. Any dentist that wants to offer Invisalign treatment and procedures must do special training and complete a Invisalign training course. At Hampstead dental you will be treated by a fully trained and qualified Invisalign dentist.

Can I eat normally when I have Invisalign?

Yes, you can eat all foods. There are no restrictions to what you can or cannot eat. Just remember that your aligners are clear and so you might want to avoid them staining or starting to look yellow. We recommended that you only drink water when you have your aligners in, and remove your aligners when eating or drinking any other food.

When can I remove my aligners?

You can remove your aligners when you are eating or brushing your teeth. We recommended that you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day to ensure optimal results.

Do I sleep with my Invisalign aligners in?

Yes, definitely.

What is the best way to clean the aligners?

It is best to clean your aligners with a separate toothbrush and rinse them in lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as you don’t want to distort your aligner. Also try and use a different toothbrush to the one you use to brush your teeth, this will prevent bacterial cross contamination.

What if my aligners break?

If your aligners break for some reason, check how far into wearing them you are. If you only have 1-2 days until you swap into new aligners, you could first try on the next size up and see if they fit early. However, if you are still concerned, call and book an appointment with your dentist to assess the situation.

How long will the treatment be?

The length of treatment is dependent on how simple or complex your case is. Simple cases are finished within 3- 6 months and the complex causes will be 12-18 months long. The length of treatment may also differ depending on how often you wear your Invisalign aligners. You need to wear them at least 20-22 hours a day to finish on your proposed end date.

How often do I change my Invsialign aligners?

You should change your aligners on average every one to two weeks. Your Invisalign dentist will let you know how long to wear your aligners as it does depend on your specific treatment plan. This will help correct your teeth position at a manageable time frame and give you the best results.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the treatment time?

Wearing your aligners for at least 20-22 hours will help move your teeth faster which will help accelerate your treatment timeframe. There are also special Invisalign chewies you can bite down on for around 10 minutes a day. This helps the aligners fit tightly on your teeth and will increase the movement. This can also increase the chance you will finish your treatment early or on time.

What are Invisalign attachments?

Invisalign attachments are small tooth coloured dots of filling material that are glued to your teeth. These attachments serve as little anchors for the aligners to attach to and help make your treatment more effective. Not everyone needs attachments and your Invisalign dentist will tell you if any phase of your treatment will need attachments.

Is Invisalign painful?

No, Invisalign is not a painful treatment. However, the initial process of moving the teeth can give you discomfort for a couple of days when you are wearing a new aligner. It might feel similar to someone who gets braces on and feels the pressure of the teeth moving. Some other people will experience tenderness in their teeth or jaw. The aligners are trying to move your teeth into an ideal position.
